Due to the devastating bushfires in Australia in 2019 and early 2020, it is estimated that over 60,000 koalas have died and more than 45 million acres burned across Australia. The scorching of the Eucalyptus trees have left the koala’s habitat unsuitable for living and their primary source of water to be greatly affected. Approximately ⅓ of the entire global population of koalas was lost, pushing this species towards extinction by 2050.
With the formation of the Koala Conservation Crew as my Eagle Scout Project, I am making a public call to proactively protect these endangered species. My goal is to raise $9,750 representing $1 per mile between my home town in New Jersey to The Koala Hospital in Australia.
My project beneficiary is The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie NSW - Australia.
Conservation efforts will primarily consist of the following elements. You may find more information within the tabs above.
Creating a free three-part virtual educational series on Zoom.
Constructing wildlife drinking stations to be shipped to a destination determined by my beneficiary.
Fundraising by selling Koala Conservation Crew merchandise and utilization of a GoFundMe account.
Organizing a letter-writing campaign in support of the Koala Protection Act.
Hi, my name is Katie Cannon. I am a senior at Millburn High School and an Eagle Scout in Scouts BSA Troop 19 sponsored by St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills New Jersey. I am a founding member of an all-girls Troop and a member of the Inaugural Class of Female Eagle Scouts in the United States.
Ever since I was a little kid, I've had a love for koalas. I have three koala stuffed animals, named Kenny, Koaly, and Koala Lou. These three stuffed animals have been with me through so many of my life adventures. Some of my favorite memories include traveling to many countries with them, such as France, Italy, and Switzerland. In addition, the first Scout patrol of my newly formed Scout BSA Troop was called the Cool Koala Patrol.
In 2019, my family was displaced from our home for 14 months due to a tree significantly damaging my home. When I heard koala's and their habitat was endangered, I was drawn to forming the Koala Conservation Crew in hopes that I could make a difference in raising awareness about the importance of koala preservation as I can relate to how scared they must feel.
I thank you in advance for your support in helping to protect the future of koala’s!
